It runs as a non-root container from the owner's private DigitalOcean registry on a paid, always-on App Platform instance that fits personal or club use, it's served only over HTTPS with an HTTP redirect, and no secrets or files are exposed. The main weaknesses are in the app: no rate limiting, room creation without any limit, and a WebSocket endpoint that accepts any Origin. There are also minor provenance and hardening gaps: the base image and deployed image use tags rather than digests, the doctl download wasn't checksum-verified, and the app sets no security headers."

"build": "I've built the chat room app and it works locally. All 6 automated tests pass, and I also ran it in its Docker container and checked it with curl. Nothing is deployed yet, and I stopped and removed the container afterwards.\n\n**Stack:** Node.js with Express, and the `ws` library for WebSockets. Messages are kept in memory, with the last 50 per room. Everything is in one process, so `server.js` holds the whole server and `public/index.html` is the web page.\n\n**What's covered:**\n- **Web page (`GET /?room=general`):** you pick a display name and a room, see the room's recent messages, and new messages appear live. It also lists who is online and reconnects on its own if the connection drops.\n- **WebSocket (`/ws?room=\u2026&user=\u2026`):** each new client first gets the room's history. Messages go to everyone in that room, including the sender. An invalid message gets an `{\"type\":\"error\"}` reply and is not saved.\n- **Server-Sent Events:** I built this option too. Messages are posted with `POST /api/rooms/<room>/messages`, which returns `201`, or `400` for an empty, too-long or malformed message. They are streamed from `GET /api/rooms/<room>/events`.\n- **History:** `GET /api/rooms/<room>/messages` returns the latest 50, oldest first.\n- **Health check:** `GET /healthz`, for the hosting platform to check the app is up.\n\n**Tests:** they confirm that a broadcast reaches the sender and the other user, that rooms are kept separate, that five people sending at once all get every message, that the 50-message history limit holds, that bad messages are rejected over HTTP and WebSocket, and that the event stream delivers messages.\n\n**Limitation:** because messages and connections live in memory, the app must run as exactly one instance, and history is lost whenever it restarts. That is acceptable for a hobby club. Running several instances would need a shared store such as Redis.\n\n**Run it:**\n```\nnpm install && npm start # listens on $PORT, default 8080\nnpm test\ndocker build -t chat . && docker run -p 8080:8080 chat\n```\n\n**For step 2:** there's a `Dockerfile` and a DigitalOcean App Platform config in `.do/app.yaml`. It is set to one instance, port 8080 and the `/healthz` check. App Platform handles WebSockets, and the web page switches to `wss://` automatically when served over HTTPS.",
"deploy": "The chat app is live at **https://adb-gn1e1-realtime-4oyp9.ondigitalocean.app**, and every requirement in `TASK.md` worked when I tested it through that URL.\n\n**What's running**\n- **Container registry** `adb-gn1e1-realtime`: holds the app's Docker image as `adb-gn1e1-realtime-web:v1`. It's on the free starter tier.\n- **App Platform app** `adb-gn1e1-realtime`: one instance of the smallest size, $5/month, with HTTPS provided by DigitalOcean. The real-time endpoint is `wss://adb-gn1e1-realtime-4oyp9.ondigitalocean.app/ws`.\n- **Estimated total:** about $5/month.\n\n**What I tested on the live site**\n- The web page loads.\n- With four users connected to one room and all sending at the same moment, every user received all four messages within 1.5 seconds.\n- A user in a different room received none of them.\n- Empty messages and messages over 1000 characters are rejected: `400` over HTTP, and an error reply over WebSocket.\n- The history API returns the room's messages.\n- The Server-Sent Events alternative also works: posting returns `201`, and the message arrives on both the event stream and WebSocket clients.\n\n**Limitation:** messages are kept in memory, so the app must stay at one instance. Room history is wiped whenever it restarts or is redeployed.\n\nNothing needed a person, so `human_steps` is empty. I didn't create any new credentials, so there's no `.env`; logging in to the registry used the existing access token.\n\n`deployment.json` is written, and the deployment config is in `.do/app.yaml`. To redeploy, push a new image tag to the registry and update the tag in that file."
